Kannada flag

Kannada flag

The Kannada flag is a bicoloured flag. The flag is divided into two horizontal strips of equal length and breadth with a yellow strip on the top and red strip at the bottom. The yellow and red signify peace and courage respectively. The flag is not officially or unofficially the Flag of Karnataka. Based on ancient Hindu belief the yellow and red colours in the flag stand for arshina (turmeric) and kumkuma (vermilion), respectively. These two substances, used since time immemorial in India for various reasons, signify auspiciousness and well-being. The flag does not have any legal status.
This flag was first conceived as the flag of a political party called "Kannada Paksha" which was formed in 1965 by M. Ramamurthy. The political party did not last long, but the flag has been consistently used all over Karnataka to represent Karnataka and Kannada. This flag is confusingly hoisted on November 1 on the occasion of Karnataka Rajyotsava which is a state holiday (by some people thinking it a so called State flag,) in many institutions and after hoisting the flag state anthem 'Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate' is sung. because most of state people don't know that hoisting any flag other than Tri Colour is illegal and unconstitutional.
There is no government order elevating it to official status. Then chief minister of Karnataka B. S. Yeddyurappa withdrew circular imposing curbs on hoisting Kannada flags on government buildings. But this move was challenged in Karnataka High Court specially when then Chief Minister D. V. Sadananda Gowda, in his budget speech, said that "The hoisting of the “Kannada flag” on November 1 will be made compulsory in all government offices, schools and colleges.” A case filed in High Court of Karnataka by Prakash Shetty and during case hearing the Honorable High Court asked "whether the government can hoist any flag other than the national flag and whether the State can salute such a flag during official functions. The court had also sought to know whether it is possible for the State to have any flag other than the national flag while also asking the Union government to clarify the law in this connection". forced state Govt to withdraw this unconstitutional circular in High Court of Karnataka before the eve of Rajyotsava in 2012.
